At Lech Garage & Auto Body, we're proud to say that we're a third-generation, family-owned and operated business that has been serving the community for over 75 years. Our story began in 1945, when Joe Lech Sr. started a small truck and service repair station on Shaw Street in New Bedford. Since then, we've grown and expanded to become one of the premier auto repair, maintenance, and auto body repair facilities in the area.
Our History
Our journey began when Joe Lech Sr. started repairing trucks for his father's dairy business in the late 1900s. He later worked for Hemingway Trucking as service manager, where he was in charge of a fleet that serviced the entire Eastern United States. In 1945, Joe decided to go into business on his own, starting Lech Garage with a small truck and service repair station that included gas pumps. In 1946, his son, Joe Lech Jr., began working for his father in the shop, quickly becoming knowledgeable about transmissions and developing a passion for towing. Together, they moved the business to Kenyon Street and Belleville, eventually outgrowing the original location.
Our Family Legacy
Throughout the years, the Lech family has been committed to providing exceptional service, quality work, and a personal touch. Joe Lech Jr. and his wife, Jeannine, continued the family legacy by expanding the business and modernizing the facilities. Their daughter, Christine Lech-Goulart, joined the family business after graduating from Bridgewater State College, where she studied business administration. She brought her passion for auto body repair and became a certified auto body technician.
